Katarina Stapic – Illustrator/Graphic Designer

Born and bred in the land ‘Down Under’ I grew up in a world of
Dreamtime and possibilities, in one of the greatest cities on earth,
Sydney. My whole life I have immersed myself in the arts: drawing,
performing, reading and creating; all of which have helped mold
me into the well-rounded visual communicator I am today.

I studied fine arts in the year 2007 at Meadowbank TAFE; before
attending the Billy Blue College of Design in North Sydney from
2008-2011, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied
Design (Digital Media).

From 2010-2011 I landed my dream job with my favourite childhood
pencil company, Faber-Castell, as their illustrator and graphic designer.
I continue to be their illustrator for ‘Creativity for Kids’ workshops held
around Sydney during the festive seasons and promotional tours.
These workshops have led me to work at the Art Gallery of NSW
during the ‘Picasso’ opening on November 12th 2011, and at
Big W Rouse Hill Town Centre April 7th 2011.

My role as an illustrator is to help guide and inspire creativity and
imagination among children. I am in charge of demonstrating how
to draw characters, do children’s portraits, design colouring activities
and promoting Faber-Castell’s ‘Playing and Learning’ product range.
I was also commissioned as a sketch artist for Faber-Castell’s 250th
international Australian anniversary event at the Sydney Opera House
November 18th 2011.

I currently work as a graphic designer in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire,
and I love every minute of it! My goals in the future would be to have
an extensive and well-rounded career in illustration, graphic design and
visual communication. To travel and experience the world so I can truly
connect to people with my art through my experiences.

I want to create magic, evoke emotions and bring fantasy to life.

These are the first things that come to mind:

1. Have an open mind to learning, ESPECIALLY from your lecturers. The students who succeed are not the ones who are closed-minded and think they know everything, but the ones who listen.

2. Everything you learn is of value, we must learn from the ground up to develop an all round understanding of art and the world around us. It'll make you that much more equipt to developing the skills you desire more efficently.

3. Have a visual diary to keep your sketches, ideas and inspirations. This is invaluable.

4. Be inspired by your class mates around you. Help and learn from others as it will help you in being the best artist you can be

5. Don't ever, EVER, do art for the money. I do it for the magic and joy it brings to me and the people who enjoy my art. My goal is to make people feel deeply about my work. Not to be rich. I have dreams I aspire to, but it's the journey that makes me happy.

6. Enjoy it while it lasts and appreciate it. I miss art school and will be going back in a year or so because there is still so much I want to learn (that unfortunately I took for granted while I was 18). I am lucky enough to of grown up and had a lot of life experience, to of gotten a degree in design and to be working in the industry....but I will always be a traditional artist at heart and long for the day to really study it further

If you are ever feeling down, need inspiration or advise, I am more than happy to help. I wish you a wonderful experience at art school :blowkiss:
